VERWOOD BOWLING CLUB
Established in 1920

Verwood Bowling Club (VBC) has many very able and experienced players who enjoy their coaching on one of the finest greens in the area. It's a great venue for anybody either wishing to learn or play the game of bowls.

As well as having an excellent green, VBC has improved and repositioned our groundsman's equipment workshop and facilitated a new spacious patio area for outside entertaining (BBQ’s et al!) and improved spectator viewing.

VBC is very active in playing a good number of interclub events and friendly matches as well as playing in league matches throughout Dorset and Hants. With the introduction of well styled club shirts, morale is high.

As well as bowling, the club has an active social side for planning fun events as well as weekly afternoon whist drives and short mat bowling in the winter. On this website, you will find more information and our club promise to make bowling enjoyable and fun for all. Look out for our SOCIAL EVENTS during the season which may offer an introduction to the game for learners and seasoned bowlers alike. So get active, have fun and give it a go!

Five Reasons to Play Bowls

We believe everybody should realise the joy and benefit of playing sport, and there are so many reasons why bowls is ideally placed to unlock these fantastic advantages. Here are our top 5 reasons to give bowls a try:

lawn bowls, verwood, dorset, social club, clubhouse
  1. Playing bowls is very doable. Whatever your physique, bowls is a sport for everybody and it will help improve your fitness levels and mental wellbeing.
  2. Bowls is not expensive. To get going you don’t need lots of new kit and clubs put on taster sessions for free. Even when you get the bug, a set of bowls and joining a club can cost as little as £90.
  3. After football, bowls has the second highest number of clubs in the country. With so many places to play, it’ll take no time at all to get to a bowls club close to your home.
  4. Compared to most sports, age and gender differences have less of an effect on a game of bowls, so it’s a perfect sport to spend time and enjoy a bit of friendly competition with your family.
  5. Bowls clubs are sociable places full of people looking to have fun, so bowls is a great way to relax, make new friends and feel part of your local community.

Lawn Green Bowling has been long considered as a sport for the retired but truly is the sport for all ages, all sexes and all abilities. It is a game that is easy to learn - and the rest of your bowling career to master. Bowls can provide many years of enjoyment to everybody whether it be purely at Club level or into County.

Verwood Bowling Club is a friendly Club open to members of all standards. The Club is progressive and is always looking to make improvements for the benefit of the members. If you are new to the game or want to start playing again, then we have experienced players on hand to offer support and tuition. If you are an experienced player looking for a new club we offer opportunities for competitive play in a number of leagues or Club tournements. Please go to the Contact Us. page if you would like to make an enquiry about membership or if you would like more information about our Club.

Look out for our TASTER DAYS normally around April/May, we open our factilites for you to look around and try out Lawn Green Bowling for yourself. The dates and times will be advertised on this website around February/March and sometimes during the season.

We are a private club and our landscaped ground with green and clubhouse, is on the edge of Ringwood Forest and Verwood's Recreational Ground giving us a secluded and a great environment for bowling. Being close to Verwood town centre there is easy access to good coffee shops, banks and other general outlets for your convenience.

As well as Lawn Green Bowling, which is undertaken in the season between April - September, we organise a number of social events in order to enhance our enjoyment of the Club spirit away from the rivalry of league play and Club competitions. These run throughout the year making full use of our clubhouse during the season and the winter months.

During the closed season we also have regular activities in our clubhouse including Whist Drives on Monday afternoons and Short Mat Bowls on Wednesday afternoon and Sunday morning for all playing and social members.

Club Management

Our Club is very much self funding, and relies on various club events, social evenings and local fetes to top-up our annual membership subcriptions. We also actively pursue sponsorship from local businesses when the opportunity arises.

Our Club Managemnent Committee drives our activities and various other club related projects along with membership volunteers. This includes carrying out maintenance work on the green and clubhouse to keep our grounds in tip-top condition, and various other tasks aimed at improving our facilities for the enjoyment of our members and visitors to our club.

Our Social Committee arranges and organises the social events throughout the year as well as working closely with the Management Committee to help with Club activities associated with tournament play days, friendly matches and touring team matches.

Club Officers are elected or re-elected annually at the club AGM which is held at our clubhouse in October.

All members are encourage to get involved with the running of the club or if they wish to apply for election to Officer in order to help contribute in managing and driving the future of the club forward.

New members joining our club are also encouraged to get involved in all of our organised activities throughout the season and the winter months: Roll-Ups, Friendly matches and Club Competitions throughout the summer months and throughout the winter months there are Social Events, Whist Drive afternoon and Short Mat Bowls in the Clubhouse. Please go to the Contact Us page if you would like to make an enquiry about membership or if you would like more information about our Club.

League Play - where we stand

All playing members are encouraged to make themselves available for the various teams that we have competing in leagues and competitions throughout the season in order to maximise the Club's ability to be successful in bowls associations' competitive fixtures.

However, it is acknowledged, particularly for new bowlers, that confidence, as well as ability, plays a big part in competetive bowling. To provide match practise opportunities for all members, we run Club only competitions and tournaments throughout the season as well as Club "casual play" at least one evening each week when possible and sometimes on a Sunday morning.

The Club also organises a number of friendly games with either local or travelling bowling clubs throughout the season. Our Team Captains will take these opportunities to encourage players who wish to step up to participate in competeitve league standard games alongside some of our more experienced players.

We currently have opportunities for additional playing members, particularly those with experience, in order to enhance our team selections options for league games. Please go to the Contact Us page if you would like to make an enquiry about membership or if you would like more information about our Club.
